To avoid impersonations, Twitter is launching “Verified Accounts” later this summer. A special seal will be featured for Twitter Verified Accounts. (Please note that this doesn't mean accounts without a verification seal are fake.)
The beta version will begin with public officials, celebrities, public agencies, athletes, and other well known individuals at risk of impersonation. Twitter hope to verify more accounts in the future but due to the resources required, verification will begin only with a small set.
The goal of a Verified Accounts program should be to make it clear to users which celebrity accounts are real and which ones aren't. If the program is limited to a small number of celebrities, the goal cannot be achieved.
