Headland designed Blaby District Council website recognised as best local authority site in UK

Quarter Four of the Sitemorse INDEX website rankings has seen the Headland designed Blaby District Council reach first place, following their move to the new Umbraco-based website.

The INDEX is an independent industry standard for benchmarking digital governance, Sitemorse ranks 404 local authorities each quarter on their website based on 1,600 tests and measures. Scores are based on optimisation and compliance and looks at factors such as loading speed, code quality and accessibility to provide the best visitor experience possible

The Council has seen a radical shift towards online transactions and it was vital that the customer finds the website easy to use and understand.  Now nearly 80% of orders for bulky item collection are taken online, and the equivalent of almost half of all households in the district visit the website every month.

The launch of the new site included a range of bespoke functionality created by Headland during the build phase including; management tools, presentation of documents and links in a simple understandable format, a focus on those with learning disabilities, and making all content readable by screen readers.

With the recent introduction of EU Web Accessibility Directive and further improvements, the Council made further improvements to its site, resulting in a first-place ranking with the Quarter Four results.

Colin Jones, Group Manager for Corporate Services, said: “The shift to digital over the last five years has been significant and this has made it even more important for us to have an inclusive, easy-to-use website, as well as complying with government guidelines.
