Supporting Available Car's drive for digital transformation

Available Car is one of the leading car supermarkets in the UK. The business, first established in the Midlands in 2002. Over the last 18 years, Available Car has expanded to become one of the UK's largest and most successful used car supermarkets, with stores in Castle Donington, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Cannock and Leeds.

The Solution
Available Car Ltd is a business that has a specific way of doing things. It’s all about putting the customer at the centre of the business proposition, supporting them in their decision making and letting them know that they are in the driving seat. Not all second hand car sales work this way!

Working with Beyond (Available Car’s marketing agency) the team leading on creative and brand strategy, our role was to provide the technical design built on the Umbraco CMS platform, data integration, hosting platform and on-going technical support required to replicate the clients business ethos online.

Key to delivering the solution was and continues to be data. Providing accurate, timely and comprehensive data for the 5000+ cars available on the website is the first step in putting the visitor on the right road to picking up the keys to their new car at an Available Car site.

The data driving the Available Car website represents a significant integration project. The site data for each car comes from 3 different sources; CAP-HPI (third party data owner), CDK Drive (the Available Car back-office system and the buyers guide tool. Finance options are presented using the integrated Santander calculator. The buyers guide is an application built by Headland which pulls together the available data and promotes it to the live website.

With data arriving from multiple sources for 5000+ cars site speed is key to the visitor’s user experience. In relation to site speed two technical aspects of the project are critical, the technical design of the website architecture and the hosting infrastructure. We designed a robust, efficient data flow bringing together data from CAP-HPI, CDK Drive and the buyers tool. In addition we designed a resilient and fast hosting infrastructure on the AWS platform.

The Result
Available Car’s new digital eco-system went live to a critical schedule in December 2019. The back-office supporting the businesses administration and customer services speaks with third party data owners the sales team application and the customer facing website on the Umbraco CMS platform. The specification and performance data for the 5000+ cars across 4 sites can be searched and filtered. The sales status of each car is displayed to the visitor. And the visitors finance options are calculated with the flexibility to meet the visitors requirements.

The entire platform is scalable and ready to support future developments and functionality to enhance the user experience. Headland provides the helpdesk and technical support that underpins Available Car’s data driven online presence.
