The challenge

Machine Mart, Britain’s no.1 specialist tools & equipment superstore, required a sector-leading, mobile-friendly e-commerce platform to complement their 65-strong branch network. After an extensive review of the market, Machine Mart selected Headland to fulfill their e-commerce requirements and take their online sales and customer service to the next level.

The solution

The aim was to provide site visitors with the most flexible, user-centric shopping experience in the sector across desktop, tablet and mobile devices. We worked with the project team at Machine Mart to define the UX and functional requirements, the creative brief and the detailed functional specification at a granular level.

Machine Mart provides a large and comprehensive range from wood burning stoves to power tools, their own brand Clarke’s products to international brands such as Bosch and DeWalt. The website required a comprehensive search facility and UX to match the breadth of products. To aid the user experience, we introduced an image-based mega dropdown navigation and context specific filters at search results level.

The results

At the end of a 10 month development cycle the Machine Mart website went live on schedule, in good time for the festive season, as planned and on budget. We have great expectations of the sales potential of the website in the period ahead, supported by the revenue-generating features designed into the site.
